    Octavo, 322pp. Publisher’s green cloth, title in gilt on spine and front cover with gilt illustration of sword. No additional printings listed on copyright page. Solid text block, light wear to edges. Engraved frontispiece portrait, with additional portrait opposite page 238, both with tissue guards. Previous owner’s name stamped on front free endpaper and flyleaf. (Blockson 7868) (Moebs 169) A scarce example in this condition.

    Henry Ossian Flipper (1856-1940) was the first African American to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Flipper went on to serve in the Tenth U.S. Cavalry Regiment, which was one of the original Buffalo Soldier units. He later worked as an assistant to the Secretary of the Interior.
