Octavo, vi, [5]-504pp, [2]. Period full calf, title on spine in gilt, decorative gilt bands on spine. Front hinge starting, but stable. This copy lacking the frontispiece portrait of Alexander Hamilton, and subsequent plates of James Madison and John Jay. Notable toning throughout, occasional foxing to leaves, solid text block. Housed in custom half morocco clamshell, title in gilt on spine. (Sabin 23985)
This new edition is a reissue of the 1817 edition, which was the first single volume edition. It was published the same year as Jacob Gideon’s “New Edition” in Washington, DC, with small variations. This New Edition is the first to include James Madison’s revisions, with an appendix containing the Articles of Confederation, the Constitution, and the first twelve amendments to the Bill of Rights.
