Photographer Steve Schapiro (1934-2022) traveled with James Baldwin (1924-1987) to various cities across the United States during the Civil Rights Era, documenting key moments in the fight for racial equality. Notable cities include Selma, where they witnessed the historic Selma to Montgomery marches of 1965; Atlanta, Georgia, Baldwin’s hometown; and New York City, where Baldwin lived and often spoke out against racial injustice. Through their travels, Schapiro’s photographs captured the essence of Baldwin’s activism and the broader civil rights movement in America.
