Roger Bannister (1929-2018) achieved worldwide fame on May 6, 1954, when he became the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, breaking a barrier many considered impossible. His record-breaking mile, completed in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds at the Iffley Road track in Oxford, solidified his place in athletic history. Bannister went on to become a distinguished neurologist, leaving an indelible mark on both the worlds of medicine and athletics.
