James Gambier, 1st Baron Gambier (1756-1833), was a career officer of the Royal Navy. Entering the Navy in 1767 as a midshipman, Gambier reached the rank of admiral in 1795 and was promoted to Admiral of the Fleet in 1830. He participated in the American Revolutionary War, the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. A very religious man, Gambier was nicknamed “Dismal Jimmy” by those under his command. He served as governor of Newfoundland from 1802-1804, and he was head of the British delegation that negotiated the Treaty of Ghent with the United States which ended the War of 1812. Gambier was an early benefactor of Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, which was named for him. Lord Gambier died at his home Iver Grove in 1833.
