Description

Inscribed by General Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr, the four star Commandant of the Marine Corps and first Marine on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, this is the first edition of The Island War by Frank O. Hough.

Octavo, xv, [3], 413pp. Black cloth, title stamped in gilt on spine. Stated “first edition” on copyright page. Light wear to cloth, solid text block. Includes numerous photographs and thirteen full page maps. In the publisher’s dust jacket, light shelf wear, $5.00 retail price on front flap, foxing to verso, chipping at spine, a very good example. Includes JSA authentication.

Inscribed on the half title: “To Mr. Theodore _, with kindest regards, Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr / Commandant U.S. Marine Corps.” A scarce signed book from General Shepherd.

Gen. Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr (1896-1990) spent 42 years in the Marine Corps, serving as its first representative to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. During World War II, he took command of the First Marine Division in the attack on Guam in 1944, and soon after led the successful Allied invasion of Okinawa Island. During the Korean War, he was a lieutenant general commanding all Marine forces in the Pacific. Shepherd retired in 1959.
