Description
One of the first campaign biographies of Abraham Lincoln, The Life and Public Services of Hon. Abraham Lincoln by D.W. Bartlett.
Octavo, vii, 354pp. Green pebbled cloth, title in gilt. Rubbing to tips, some light foxing to text block. Frontispiece portrait with tissue paper, foxing to tissue. (Sabin 3724) (Howes B198) A very good example.
This work by D.W. Bartlett (1828-1912) was the second book-length biography of the Republican presidential candidate in 1860. It was announced by H. Dayton of New York on May 19th and released on June 4th. The first publication was released in paper wrappers but was followed by this work, the “Authorized Edition,” two weeks later. The Lincoln campaign authorized no campaign biographies, so this was a stretch for the publisher to claim. (Horrocks, 48)
