Octavo [two volumes], xv, [3], 388pp; xv, 459pp. Red cloth, title in gilt on spine, coat of arms on front cover in gilt. Stated “fourth edition” on title page. Complete with frontispiece portrait in both volumes, 8 plates and numerous illustrated plans. Light sunning to spine, bookplate in both volumes, solid text block. From the private library of British philanthropist Gospatric Home.

Inscribed in Volume I by the author: “To my good friend / Sir Donald Currie / G.C.M.G. / from the author / Wolseley F.M. / Onboard the S. Yacht Iolaire / 24th July 1901.”

Field Marshal Garnet J. Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley, was a distinguished British Army officer who rose to prominence during the Victorian era. Born on June 4, 1833, he served in various military campaigns, including the Crimean War, Indian Mutiny, and Ashanti War. Wolseley gained renown for his innovative military strategies and organizational reforms, particularly in logistics and training. His successful Nile Expedition in 1884-1885 to relieve General Gordon at Khartoum solidified his reputation as a competent and decisive leader. He later served as Commander-in-Chief of the British Army from 1895 to 1900, overseeing significant modernization efforts. Wolseley’s military career spanned over four decades. He passed away on March 25, 1913.
