Leigh Brackett (1915-1978), also known as “the Queen of Space Opera,” wrote dozens of science fiction short stories and novels before turning to screenplays. Brackett worked on the original screenplay for The Empire Strikes Back but passed away before production began. Her draft contained many moments that ultimately appeared in the film, including the Hoth base battle, the love triangle, and the duel between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.
