Description

Signed first edition of The Moving Target by John Ross Macdonald, in the scarce first state dust jacket.

Octavo, 245pp. Brick red cloth, title in green on spine and front cover. Top edge dyed bright red. Stated “First Edition” on copyright page. Solid text block, a touch of rubbing to corners and spine tips bumped, internally fine. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $2.50 retail price on front flap, light wear to corners, two short closed tears along back panel. Vibrant colors on cover and spine, a near fine example. Housed in a custom red cloth clamshell with title in gilt on spine. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper: “To Jim Akister, Carol’s brother and therefore my friend. Kenneth Millar (John Macdonald).”

Kenneth Millar used the pseudonym John Ross Macdonald to avoid confusion with his wife, Margaret Millar, who also had a growing career in writing. The Moving Target is the first book in the Lew Archer series and a Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone title.
