Comments: Joel Elias Spingarn (1875-1939) was an American educator, literary critic and civil rights activist. He served as one of the first leaders of the NAACP and is often remembered by the award that is given annually in his name, The Spingarn Medal. Popular recipients include: George Washington Carver, Mary McLeod Bethune, Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King, Daisy Bates, Sammy David, Jr., Hank Aaron, Rosa Parks, Bill Cosby and Oprah Winfrey.
