Description
The North American Indian by Edward S. Curtis, the Custom Limited Edition from Cardozo Fine Arts, a republication of the 1907-1930 limited edition in it’s entirety.
Quarto, [twenty volumes], 5,023pp. Folio, [five volumes], 723 photogravure plates. Three quarter mahogany bonded leather, archival beige cloth boards, title in gilt on the spine, top edge gilt. Hand-stamped design in gilt on the spine, replicating the original design by Curtis. The original 20 portfolios were reproduced in 5 volumes. Only Volume I of the octavo editions and Volume I of the portfolios were removed from the publisher’s shrink wrap for review.
The Custom Edition of this work was limited to 75 copies of the quarto and folio volumes, this being number 71/75, numbered in pencil on the colophon.
All of the Custom Edition images were sourced from the original photogravures in the Frederick Webb Hall Set of The North American Indian. (Howes C965) It is the only time that The Hodge Set has been used for this type of reproduction. The original publication was limited to 500 sets, but it is believed that only 272 sets were bound and sold by the publisher, at a subscription price of $3,000 per set. The project was funded by J.P. Morgan, who gave Curtis interest free loans of $15,000 per year. (Pritzker, 14)
