Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948) dedicated his life to his legal studies and United States Politics. He was an unsuccessful presidential candidate in the 1916 election against Woodrow Wilson, but was later appointed Secretary of State by President Warren G. Harding in 1921. Hughes remained in this position after Coolidge took office, eventually stepping down in 1925. He also served as the 36th Governor of New York, an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, and the 11th Chief Justice of the United States.
