This is a portion of Robert B. Parker’s doctoral dissertation, for which he received a PhD in English Literature from Boston University in 1971. His work explores the character archetype of the “hard boiled detective” through the works of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, and Ross Macdonald.
