Octavo, [two volumes], viii, 487pp, [12]; viii, 501pp, [9]. Finely bound in half brown calf, title in gilt on brown morocco panel affixed to spines. Ornate marbled paper-covered boards, new endpapers. Volume I titled “Je M’Appelle France” by Adrienne Mark, Volume II titled “Call Me French” by Adrienne Mark. Solid text blocks, faint toning throughout, a near fine set.
Original VHS tape of the 1996 film “The Proprietor,” included in slipcase.
Includes letter from Grace Bindery in Jacksonville, FL describing the alterations made to binding. Check showing payment from Merchant Ivory to Gracy Bindery dated 1995 laid-in as well. All housed in blue cloth slipcase, lightly worn with some dust.
The Proprietor (1996) tells the story of an expatriated French novelist who returns to Paris and discovers her childhood home is up for auction. The author in the story, Adrienne Mark, is the author listed on the rebound books included here. Adrienne Mark was portrayed by notable French actress Jeanne Moreau. The movie also features Sam Waterston, Nell Carter, Sean Young, and Christopher Cazenove.
Originally from Devon, England, Alan and Maureen Grace relocated their bookbindery to Louisville, KY, with sponsorship from notable collector Armand Champa. Upon completing the rebinding of Champa?s extensive library, the couple moved to Jacksonville, FL to continue their bookbinding business until Alan passed away in 2011.
