The Science of Life is recognized as one of the first modern textbooks on biology. The writing was split between C.P. Wells, son of H.G. Wells, and Julian Huxley, brother of Aldous Huxley. H.G. Wells carried out the revisions and dealt with the publishers. At the time of its original release in 1929, the book was a huge success, but sales dwindled following the stock market crash and subsequent depression.
