Within the text block, [p. 781-782] incorrectly bound, four torn leaves, occasional foxing and toning, issue I with the most notable wear. This collection of 13 issues includes the following sequential months: August 1834, October 1834, November 1834, December 1834, January 1835, February 1835, March 1835, April 1835, May 1835, June 1835, July 1835, August 1835, September 1835. Includes the first writings of Edgar Allan Poe, “Berenice” and “Morella.”
Edgar Allan Poe was hired as a staff writer for The Southern Literary Messenger in 1835, but was fired a month later, likely due to his drinking habits. He was rehired soon after. The first installments of his only novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, appeared in later issues of The Messenger.
