The Spy was the second novel from James Fenimore Cooper, first published in New York in 1821 by Wiley & Halstead. In 1831, Richard Bentley began publishing the “Standard Novels” series, which took multi-volume works and condensed them to single volumes. The Pilot by James Fenimore Cooper was the first novel in the series, which would eventually include 126 volumes over a 24 year period.
