The Air Force Day Banquet, held on August 1, 1947, took place at the Statler Hotel in Washington, D.C. This event marked the first national observance of “Air Force Day,” designated by President Truman six weeks earlier to honor the Army Air Forces on its 40th anniversary. The event was hosted shortly before the National Security Act of 1947, which created a separate military branch for the United States Air Force. Gen. Doolittle served as the master of ceremonies, and the featured speaker was General of the Army Air Forces, Carl Spaatz.
