A scarce copy of The Western Pilot by Samuel Cumings, printed in 1825. Octavo, 143pp. Printed boards, calf spine. Occasional staining throughout. Contains 44 illustrated maps of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, from Pittsburgh to New Orleans. Contains advertisements (pg. 134-143) of businesses in Cincinnati. The first edition was printed in 1822, with frequent updates between 1822-1860. (Howes H-948) It is believed that this book was based on Zadok Cramer’s 1801 book called The Navigator, without giving credit (Howes C855).

Comments: A unique piece of Western Americana and details specific to early navigation of the Ohio River.
