The Works of Shakespeare, in eight volumes, by Mr. [Lewis] Theobald. Twelvemo, [eight volumes]. Molted calf, title on spine in gilt, six decorative compartments with raised bands. Frontispiece portrait of author in Volume I, with additional frontispiece portraits in each volume. Occasional toning, but overall clean text. Dampstain to top edge of text block of Volume I, not impacting text. Marbled endpapers, marbled leaf ends. Bookplate of Chas. Pinfold, Governor of Barbados, affixed to front endpaper of each volume. Comments: The first edition of Theobald’s The Works of Shakespeare, in eight volumes, was published in 1740. An identical second edition was published in 1757, which included a copy of Shakespeare’s will and last testament in Volume I. (W. Jaggard, 501pp.)
