Barbara Walters was an outspoken supporter of the Special Olympics, her sister having been born with intellectual disabilities. Walters was a close friend of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the founder of the Special Olympics, and frequently highlighted the organization’s achievements on her television programs. Walters’ advocacy helped bring greater visibility and support to the movement for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
