Octavo, xvi, [2], 233pp. Blue cloth, title printed on spine. Stated “first edition” on copyright page. In the publisher’s dust jacket, $4.95 on front flap, two short closed tears along top edge, bright illustrations, a near fine example. (Newcomb, 209) Housed in custom black cloth clamshell. Includes “Library / Supreme Court, U.S.” bookmark.

Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “for Byron, With the high regard and appreciation of his friend – Bob Kennedy.” An exceptional association copy.

Justice Byron White (1917-2002) served as the Deputy Attorney General under Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy from 1961 until his appointment to the Supreme Court by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. During his tenure as Deputy Attorney General, White worked closely with Robert F. Kennedy on various legal and civil rights issues, and took the lead in protecting the Freedom Riders in Alabama in 1961. White was nominated by President Kennedy to fill the seat of Charles Evan Whittaker on April 2, 1962. He would serve as an Associate Justice until his retirement in 1993.
