Octavo, xii, 294pp. Contemporary marbled boards, rebacked with brown calf spine, title in gilt over red morocco. Light wear to edges of boards. Internally clean and bright, with occasional foxing, not affecting text. Previous owners bookplate affixed to front endpaper. (Sabin 48705) (Howes M-579) No map is called for in Howes or Sabin.
Comments: The first edition of this work as published in Paris in 1804, titled Voyage à l’ouest des monts Alléghanys, dans les états de l’Ohio, du Kentucky, et du Tennessée, et retour à Charleston par les Hautes-Carolines. The first English edition was published in London in 1805, with a second edition and an abridged edition following the same year. An excellent account of Francois A. Michaux’s voyage down the Ohio River, through the Kentucky territory and his return to Charleston.
