Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, published in London in 1852, complete with twenty-seven illustrations by George Cruikshank. Known as the first Cruikshank edition.
Octavo, xxiii, [1], 391pp, [1]. Full blue cloth, ornate trim stamped in blind to covers. Title in gilt on spine. All edges gilt. Slight lean to text block, worn at corners, sunning to spine, spotting to covers. Front endpaper removed. Both hinges cracked, loose along top edge of front hinge. Internally clean. A very good example. Previous ownership bookplate affixed to front endpaper. Complete with twenty-seven full-page woodcuts by George Cruikshank, and a frontispiece portrait of Stowe.

The first English edition of Uncle Tom’s Cabin was published by Clarke & Company in 1852. Provenance: This copy includes the bookplate of Henry E. Candler of Detroit, Michigan. Candler later donated his collection to The Detroit Public Library. The library held a special exhibition of his Harriet Beecher Stowe copies in 1952.
