An early English edition of Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, complete with illustrations.

Octavo, xii, 392pp. Three-quarter leather binding, with gilt trim to covers. Purple textured cloth covering boards. Five raised bands, title in gilt on spine. All edges gilt with marbled endpapers. Solid text block, with light wear to corners and faint scratches to gilt. Very faint foxing to leaves, primarily along endpapers. A near fine copy. Complete with ten full-page plates, including frontispiece. With an added illustrated title page and numerous in-text illustrations. Artwork drawn by George Thomas and T.R. Macquoid, engraved by William Thomas. (Sabin 92474)

This edition was originally announced in the “Publisher’s Circular” for October 15, 1853. Provenance: This copy includes the bookplate of Henry E. Candler of Detroit, Michigan. Candler later donated his collection to The Detroit Public Library. The library held a special exhibition of his Harriet Beecher Stowe copies in 1952.
