Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, first English edition with George Cruikshank illustrations in book form. Small card inscribed by the author laid into volume.

Octavo, xxiii, [1], 391pp. [3pp ads]. Full tan leather, title stamped in gilt over red and green leather spine labels, raised bands with decorative gilt compartments, gilt-ruled border on covers. All edges gilt. Blue-green endpapers with decorative gilt turn-ins and gilt-ruled board edges. Silk bookmark bound-in. Bound by Root & Son of London. Solid binding, light scratches to leather, light spotting to back cover. Some staining to endpapers with offsetting to outer edges due to turn-ins. Bookseller’s name (Charles E. Lauriat Co. Boston) stamped on verso of front free endpaper. Intermittent foxing with a few finger marks to text pages. Bottom corner missing from pages 245/246 and 355/356, not affecting text. Complete with all 27 woodcut plates by Cruikshank, plus frontispiece portrait and title page vignette with “Eva and Topsy.”

Small card laid-in with inscription by the author: “Very truly yours / H.B. Stowe / Mandarin Florida / Feby 18 1876” [Stowe wintered in Mandarin Florida from 1867-1884.] (Sabin 92470) (Cohn 777) A nice example of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s best-selling novel in an attractive leather binding.
