During World War II, he became one of the Marine Corps’ leading aces by downing 26 Japanese aircraft while flying the Grumman F4F Wildcat at Guadalcanal. After the war, he served as the first commissioner of the American Football League, was elected governor of South Dakota from 1955 to 1959, and later became president of the National Rifle Association. Foss also hosted television programs about the outdoors and aviation, maintaining a lifelong connection to both military service and public life.
