The first edition of What Happened To Me inscribed by LaSalle Pickett, the wife of Confederate General George Pickett.

Octavo, vi, [1], 366pp. Light blue cloth, title stamped in gilt. Top edge gilt. Faint soiling to spine from handling. Internally clean, solid text block. Complete with frontispiece portrait and six photographic plates. Bookplate on front pastedown, signed and dated by the previous owner. (Nevins II, 99)

This copy is inscribed on the front free endpaper by the author, dated “Dec. 27, 1922.”

Pickett and His Men was LaSalle Corbell Pickett’s first published work, initiating a thirty-year career of lecture tours, eleven additional books, and pieces written for magazines like Cosmopolitan and McClure’s. Her husband, George Pickett, was a Confederate General in the Civil War. Pickett was one of the commanders of the infamous Pickett’s Charge, the costly Confederate offensive front on the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
