Don Rickles (1926-2017) was a legendary insult comic known for his sharp wit and rapid-fire comedic barbs. In 1985, he was asked by his friend, Frank Sinatra, to perform at Ronald Reagan’s second inaugural celebration, but insisted he be allowed to do it unrehearsed. Rickles called it the high point of his career. He later performed at the 1989 inaugural celebration of President George H.W. Bush and was a frequent guest at White House functions. Despite being a lifelong Democrat, Rickles shared a mutual respect and friendship with both presidents, who admired his ability to poke fun without malice.
