Letter from President Harry S. Truman to his lifelong friend and fellow WWI soldier, Captain John A. Hatfield, written twelve days after assuming the presidency.
Typed letter on White House stationery, dated April 24, 1945. Includes White House mailing envelope to Lutherville, Maryland. Accompanied by JSA Letter of Authenticity. Full letter reads: “My dear Jack: It is indeed helpful to me to receive such assurances of confidence and support from my friends. Many thanks for your thoughtful letter. Very sincerely yours, Harry.”
John A. Hatfield (1889-1965) served in the United States Army during World War I, in the same artillery battery as future President Harry S. Truman. He left the army in 1922 as a commissioned officer and remained friends with Truman. When Truman assumed the presidency upon the death of President Franklin Roosevelt, Captain Hatfield and his family were regular visitors.
