Octavo, [8], 310pp, [1]. Orange cloth, title stamped in white on black. Stated “First Printing” on the copyright page. Top edge dyed black. Appears unread. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $4.95 on the front flap, “8/61” date code below, chipping at head of the spine, top corner of front flap trimmed, two short closed tears, a very good example.

Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “To Ben + Betty / Warmest regards / Red / November 13, 1961.”

Robert Penn Warren was widely known by the nickname “Red”, a reference to his bright red hair in youth. The name followed him into adulthood, used by friends and colleagues throughout his literary and academic career.
