From the collection of the Honorable Donnald K. Anderson, Clerk of the US House of Representatives from 1987 to1995. Mr. Anderson was a longtime resident of Capitol Hill, where he worked in the House of Representatives from 1960 to 1995. He was baptized Catholic in 1979, with his Godparents being an illustrious group, including Tip O’Neill, Dan Rostenkowski and John W. McCormack. He died in 2020.

Major General John W. Persons was a career Air Force officer, brother of Alabama Governor S. Gordon Persons and White House Chief of Staff, Wilton Jerry Persons. General Persons directed pilot training at Maxwell Air Force Base just prior to World War II along with General Claire Chennault. He retired in 1959 as Commander of the 14th Air Force (Flying Tigers). The gift inscription on the half title, “To Papa – With a great deal of love,” is either from his wife or daughter, both named Juliette. Persons died in 1972.

Inscribed on half title by Dwight D. Eisenhower: “For Lt. General Manton Eddy, Brilliant battle leader of World War II – with warm regard from his old friend, Dwight D. Eisenhower. Dec. 1948.” This copy, signed in December 1948, was one of a limited number of trade editions held back for dignitaries and close associates of General Eisenhower. An exceptional association copy to one of the senior army officers of World War II.
Comments: Lieutenant General Manton Sprague Eddy (1892-1962) served in both World War I and World War II. During World War II, he commanded the 9th Infantry Division in North Africa and the Battle of Normandy. During the Battle of Normandy, his troops captured the French port city of Cherbourg, which earned him the Distinguished Service Cross. In August 1944, Eddy was given command of the XII Corps in George Patton’s Third Army. He led the allied advance from Paris to the Rhine. During the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, he successfully held off the German army’s southern offensive.

With best wishes and warm regard from his friend. Dwight Eisenhower.” President Eisenhower would award John W. Bowen the Army Distinguished Service Medal in 1956.
Comments: General John William Bowen graduated from West Point in 1930. He would serve a lifelong career in the army, with tours of service in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was recommended for the position of Secretary of the General Staff by George C. Marshall, with General Eisenhower noting that Bowen “would be an ideal selection.” His future postings included Commanding Officer of the 26th Infantry Division, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Eighth Army in Korea, Commanding General of the 18th Airborne Division and commander of Fort Bragg. He left the army as a General in 1968.

Includes numerous detailed notes in pencil by Kevin McCann, offering corrections and additional details to the subject matter of the book. Interesting to read such a detailed personal account of the Eisenhower Administration.

According to records from the Eisenhower Library, there were 32 limited edition copies of Crusade In Europe, bound in red morocco, delivered to world leaders and influential supporters in 1948. People on this list included Winston Churchill, George C. Marshall, Omar Bradley and Kevin McCann.
