Henry Kissinger (1923-2023) served as National Security Advisor and later Secretary of State in the Nixon administration. Kissinger and Nixon pursued a policy of détente with the Soviet Union, leading to the signing of the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT I) and improving U.S.-Soviet relations. They also opened diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China, marking a significant shift in the Cold War dynamics. Additionally, Kissinger was a key figure in Nixon’s Vietnam War policy, involving the expansion of the war into Cambodia and the subsequent Paris Peace Accords. Their relationship was marked by mutual respect and reliance, with Kissinger having considerable influence in Nixon’s decision-making process.
