Winner of the 1943 Pulitzer Prize in Biography, this is a signed first edition of Admiral of the Ocean Sea by Samuel Eliot Morison.

Octavo, xx, 680pp. Red cloth, title in gilt on spine. Top edge dyed blue, illustrated endpapers. Stated “Published February 1942” on copyright page. Solid text block, touch of sunning to spine, a near fine example. In the publisher’s dust jacket, $3.50 retail price on front flap, light rubbing and chipping to corners and spine. A few tape repairs to verso, still sound. Complete with fifty illustrations and maps, including a frontispiece portrait and four fold-out maps. Inscribed on the front flyleaf: “To Kenneth — with best wishes of Samuel Eliot Morison.”

Rear Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison (1887-1976) was a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and a 1964 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Morison is best remembered for his 15-volume set titled “History of United States Naval Operations in World War II” and biographies of Christopher Columbus and John Paul Jones.
