Quarto, [two volume], xvi, 643pp; xi, [1], 666pp. Three-quarter calf, marbled paper-covered boards. Title in gilt on black morocco label affixed to spines. No date listed, published by G. Virtue of London in the mid-1800s. Solid text blocks, heavy wear to leather and rubbing to boards, clean interior. Some leaves remain unopened along top edge. Fold-out map on pp. 115 of Volume I split along a crease, repaired with archival tape. Complete with 58 full-page illustrations, 29 in each volume. Illustrations include a vignette title, frontispiece portraits, fold-out maps, and numerous plates depicting various elements of life throughout the Roman Empire. A nice example.
