General Carl Spaatz (1891-1974) served in several key positions during World War II, including commanding the Eighth Air Force in England, the Twelfth Air Force in North Africa, and the Fifteenth Air Force in the Mediterranean. In 1944, Spaatz took command of U.S. Strategic Air Forces in Europe, directing the strategic bombing campaign against Germany, including the bombing of German oil refineries and the coordination of air support for the D-Day invasion. Eisenhower said that Gen. Spaatz, along with Omar Bradley, were the American generals who contributed the most to victory in Europe. In March 1945, he took command of U.S. Strategic Air Forces in the Pacific Theatre of Operations, directing the strategic bombing against Japan and the eventual atomic bombings of Japan.
