The negotiations between U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev focused on nuclear disarmament and the reduction of tensions between the two superpowers. Their summit meetings, including those in Geneva (1985), Reykjavik (1986), Washington, D.C. (1987), and Moscow (1988), marked significant steps toward reducing nuclear arsenals and improving U.S.-Soviet relations. In 1987, Barbara Walters conducted a rare joint interview with Gorbachev during the Washington Summit, where the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty was signed. Walters’s interview helped to humanize the leaders and underscore the importance of diplomacy in ending the Cold War. Towards the end of the negotiations in 1987, Reagan was asked if he still believed the Soviet Union was an “evil empire,” to which Reagan responded, “no.You are talking about another time, another era.”
