The first issue of Sports Illustrated Magazine, published August 16th, 1954 by Time, Inc.

Quarto, 144pp. Illustrated covers, bound at the spine with metal staples. The front cover features a color photograph of “Night Baseball in Milwaukee,” with Ed Mathews of the Milwaukee Braves at bat. Includes a three page fold-out spread of Baseball Trading Cards, 27 in total. Two “Subscription Cards” affixed to hinge, never used or removed. Light shelf wear to covers, small split at heel of spine to cover sheet, no impact to text block.

From the personal library of Merrill Panitt (1918-1994), the founder and editorial director of TV Guide. During World War II, Panitt served on the staff of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, where he came to the attention of Walter Annenberg, the publisher of The Philadelphia Inquirer. Panitt joined The Inquirer in 1945 and worked with Annenberg to found TV Guide in 1953. He later became the director of Triangle Publications, the publisher of TV Guide, Seventeen Magazine, and many more.
