Octavo, 286pp. Blue cloth, title stamped in gray on spine. Appears unread. Illustrated with hundreds of photographs. In the publisher’s near fine dust jacket, retail price on front flap, closed tear along top edge, bright illustrations.

Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “To Alex Rosen / With the most cordial of good wishes from his friend / J. Edgar Hoover / 4.16.47.”

An excellent association copy.

Alex Rosen (1906-2006) served as Assistant Director of the FBI from 1942 to 1972, working closely with FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. During his tenure, Rosen was responsible for the General Investigative Division, which aimed to surveil and disrupt various political organizations, including civil rights groups. Rosen was also involved in the FBI’s investigation into the assassination of President Kennedy, though he later criticized the bureau’s efforts as inadequate, stating that it did little more than wait for evidence to be delivered. Rosen retired after the death of his “true friend,” J. Edgar Hoover, in 1972.
