George E. Merrick (1886–1942) was an American real estate developer and visionary best known for founding Coral Gables, Florida, a planned community near Miami. Inspired by Mediterranean Revival architecture and a commitment to aesthetics and functionality, Merrick designed Coral Gables with tree-lined streets, grand plazas, and lush landscaping, earning it the nickname “The City Beautiful.” His ambitious vision included cultural hubs like the University of Miami, which he helped establish in 1925. Merrick’s success was tied to Florida’s real estate boom of the 1920s, but he faced financial hardship following the Great Depression. Despite this, his influence shaped urban planning in South Florida.
