Octavo, [8], 721pp, [7]. Black cloth, title stamped in white on spine. The first printing, with the “R” colophon on the copyright page. Includes full page map of “Anopopei.” Rubbing to tips of black cloth, wear at head of the spine. Solid text block. Housed in custom green cloth slipcase. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $4.00 on the front flap, review by Stanley Rinehart on both flaps, chipping along top edge, closed tear along front hinge, a very good example. Dust jacket designed by Karov.
This copy is inscribed by the author on the half-title: “…They don'[t] know nothin’. Just shuffle ya from man to man.’ p. 370 / Cheers / Norman Mailer / Jan 2004.”
One of Modern Library’s “100 best English language novels” of the 20th century. The novel was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and helped establish Mailer as a major postwar American writer. Its success also led to a 1958 film adaptation directed by Raoul Walsh.
