Hollis Mathews Dole (1914-1987) was an American geologist and public servant who significantly influenced U.S. mineral and energy policy. In 1969, President Nixon appointed Dole as Assistant Secretary for Mineral Resources in the U.S. Department of the Interior, a position he held until 1973. In this role, Dole was instrumental in developing regulations for offshore oil and gas drilling, particularly along Oregon’s coast, setting precedents that other states would follow.
