General Earle G. Wheeler (1908-1975) served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1964 to 1970, overseeing U.S. military operations during the height of the Vietnam War. Appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson, Wheeler became one of Johnson’s closest military advisers, known for his loyalty and his willingness to support the administration’s war policy. Though he occasionally cautioned Johnson about the strain Vietnam placed on the armed forces, Wheeler largely backed the president’s strategy of gradual escalation and often defended it before critics in Congress.
