All volumes include the “first edition” statement on copyright page, with full number lines. Previous ownership inscription on front endpaper of Volume I, notation in Volume III. All first edition dust jackets, in very good condition, retail prices on front flap, bright illustrations, some shelf wear, especially in Volume III, with small closed tear to top edge of front panel. The final volume of this set, The Course of American Democracy 1833 – 1845, won the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 1984.
