Octavo, 126pp. Green cloth, title in gilt on spine. Previous ownership inscription on front pastedown endpaper. Faint tidemark along top edge of text block. Calls for 22 full-page, black and white photographic plates, lacking one. In publisher’s scarce dust jacket, wear at seams and some loss on back panel, reinforcements to verso. A scarce piece.
Doctor Thomas W. Burton was born a slave in Kentucky, being the youngest of 15 children. He attended Berea College and later the Medical College of Indiana. In 1892, he graduated from the Eclectic College of Physicians and Surgeons and moved to Springfield, Ohio, where he became the first African American physician in the city. In 1897, he and Dr. H.R. Hawkins, organized the Ohio Mutual Medical Association, the first black medical society in Ohio.
