Octavo, xvi, 455pp. Black cloth, title printed in gold on spine. Stated “first printing” on copyright page. Touch of wear to spine, solid text block. Previously erased notes in pencil on rear endpaper. In the publisher’s near fine dust jacket, $7.50 on front flap, shallow scratch to front panel, chips to corners of spine, short closed tear to rear hinge.

Signed by Adelaide C. Hill (maiden name Cromwell) on the front free endpaper. An outstanding example.

Adelaide M. Cromwell (1919-2019) was the first African American instructor at Hunter College and at Smith College. In 1951, she joined the faculty of Boston University, where she taught sociology until 1985. At Boston University, she co-founded the African Studies Center and directed the African-American Studies Program. She was the author of several books on African American history, most notably The Other Brahmins (1994), a study of Boston’s black upper class. She died in 2019 at the age of 99.
