Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) worked as a teacher and principal before becoming the second Black American (after W.E.B. DuBois) to graduate from Harvard. Woodson created the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now known as the ASALH. Woodson and the ASALH launched Negro History Week in 1926 to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. This week has since been expanded into the Black History Month we know today.
