Octavo, xix, [1], 275pp. Navy blue cloth, title in gilt on spine. Border stamped in blind. No additional printings listed. Light wear to gutters, otherwise sturdy. Bumped edges, some shelf wear. Complete with all listed tables, ten large fold-outs and four large fold-out maps in rear pocket.
Signed on the front endpaper by Field Marshal Douglas Haig, “Douglas Haig / Capetown / Sept 1902.” Includes marginalia on rear endpaper in Haig’s hand.
Field Marshal Douglas Haig, First Earl Haig (1861-1928) commanded the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front during World War I. Haig’s efforts breaking through the Hindenburg line during the Hundred Days Offensive led to the armistice that ended the war in November 1918. Despite his success and many accolades, Haig was nicknamed “Butcher Haig” in recognition of the two million British deaths that occurred under his leadership.
