Octavo, [two volumes], xxxvi, 660pp; xvi, 624pp. Three-quarter morocco, marbled paper boards. Title in gilt on spine. Top edge gilt. Stated “New Edition, Revised, and Enlarged” on title page. Solid text block, light wear to corners and boards, some toning to fore edge. A very good example. Complete with 120 listed illustrations; 75 in Volume I, 45 in Volume II, including frontispiece in each. Handwritten letter by the author laid in at front of Volume I, dated March 9, 1901.
Letter reads: “Dear Sirs, In accordance with your kind acceptance of my suggestion for completing payment on the set of Britannic Encyclopedias purchased of you, I sent by National Express to you, two sets of my history of the Navy (2 vols. in each set) and inclose receipted bill of $6.00 in payment for the same. After you have received the Histories in good condition, kindly send me a receipted bill for the Encyclopedia made out to Mrs. Katherine Maclay…”
